On the 3rd and 4th of November 2022, members of the boroughwide youth cabinets covering Rochdale and Pennines, Heywood and Middleton) went on a trip to London to support our MYPs (Members of UK Youth Parliament) Emilia and Henry as they participated in debates in the House of Commons with MYPs from across the UK. The rest of the members of the youth cabinet and Deputy MYPs invaded central London. We went on the London Eye (which was fun!), went sightseeing at the London Imperial Museum, enjoyed a good old Nando's and to end the day we went ice skating at the Canary Wharf (which was even MORE fun).๐ โจ It was fun seeing people fall over and it was overall a fantastic day that we hardly got any sleep because of the anticipation for the next day.
On the 4th of November, we walked to the House of commons to drop off the MYP's for their debates on topics which had been voted for and chosen by young people across the UK! These included environment, cost of living and discrimination. Henry became famous with his speech about discrimination being aired on BBC! Whilst they enjoyed that, there was more sightseeing to be done (for us). We went to the Sky Garden, the Tower of London and explored Hyde Park whilst keeping up with the debate online. We also did some filming for the Allyship project we are involved in with ENRYP and tackling violence against women! We then met up with Councillor Rachel Massey, the portfolio holder for Children's Services and Education as she supported the MYPs in Wesminster. Rachel and the MYPs joined us to enjoy our delicious pizzas๐๐. Sadly we then had to go home back to our individual homes but it was a great experience for us all and after the Cost of Living crisis was voted as the issue to campaign for over the next 2 years, we'll be doing a lot of work to address this problem across the borough of Rochdale! Please get in touch if you want to share any of your issues, suggestions or concerns over how the cost of living is impacting young people.
