The Rochdale borough Children’s Champion democratic elections are now taking place in primary schools across Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton and the Pennines! After receiving 64 applications this year, the current Children’s Champion (Hannah Nazir), Deputy (Madeleine Bamford) and members of the Children’s Council had the challenge of shortlisting them down to 20 by reading all applications and choosing the best ones with realistic campaigns to work on. The 20 shortlisted applicants then came to an interview day at Matthew Moss Youth Centre and gave a 1 minute presentation to the interview panel to introduce themselves and say 3 issues they would campaign on if elected. They also took part in teamwork and group activities and children’s council members observed their skills along with how confident they were, how well they listened to one another, participated in the activities and supported one another. At the end of the day, they discussed between them who they think would make a good Children’s Champion and announced which 6 of the interviewees got through as candidates for the democratic elections. The 6 candidates are:
Aiyla Abbas – Marland Hill CPS
David Almond – Caldershaw Primary School
George Holt – Littleborough CPS
Imogen Bramwell – Whittaker Moss
Maisha Samiullah – Hamer Primary School
Molly Judge – Alkrington Primary School
The election packs are now in schools and children from across all of the borough will vote which of the 6 candidates should be the new Children’s Champion and Deputy. Watch the video above to see who you would choose and watch out for the election results on 4th July 2017!
